Born 1966 in Ukiah, California, and raised in Folsom, Billy Raney grew up surrounded by music. His mother played piano often and filled the house with beautiful music. His dad would seek out a variety of music concerts being performed locally. His whole family would all go to see the concerts. The most memorable concert for Billy was seeing the legendary flamenco guitarist Carlos Montoya. Billy was fortunate enough to meet the legend that same day after his performance. Billy was inspired!
With this upbringing, it didn’t take long for Billy to develop his own love for music and specifically a drive to master the guitar. He set out to learn as much as he could by playing guitar with others and by forming bands. He would often go to the local blues jam and sit in and learn from playing in front of an audience.
Inspired to learn more Billy set out to study many genres, including Country (Chet Atkins, Johnny Cash), Blues (Muddy Waters, Big Bill Broonzy), Rock (Jimmy Page, Angus Young), Metal (Randy Rhoads), and Classical (Carlos Montoya, Andres Segovia).
Billy has played guitar and performed with bands now for the past 30 years and has shared album credits, and the stage, with many world renowned artists. The following are some groups Billy has been a part of; Billy Raney and Friends, Soul Taco, The Prairie City Band, The Vagabond Brothers, and The Frank Hannon Band.
Billy has also pursued advanced studies in music theory and varied ensembles in college, as well as studies in classical guitar under nationally-acclaimed artists. In addition to performing, Billy is also committed to teaching Guitar lessons. He devotes his talents to Instructing students of all ages while also authoring creative, new guitar instruction materials.
Currently playing guitar with Prairie City Acoustic, and The Frank Hannon Band, performing both locally and nationally. In addition, he is a singer songwriter, and performs solo classical guitar at weddings and other private gatherings.
