Jabari Sekou, known as “Masta JAS” on stage is a professional hand drumming percussionist with over 45 yrs. experience playing Congas, Bongos, Cajon, Timbales and many other percussion instruments. Jabari’s motto regarding percussion instruments is “If it makes noise, I play it”! Jabari is a Master Conguero and Djembefola in a variety of genres such as; Jazz, R&B, Bossa, Latin Jazz, Funk, Reggae and Gospel. His ambient, smooth groove style is a compliment to any musical compilation. As a musician Jabari has performed with many greats such as Grammy Award winning vocalist Gregory Porter. Jabari has also performed with the renowned Middle Eastern jazz violinist Bahman Sarram aka (BViolin) and many others. Jabari has taught percussion locally in the Folsom/Cordova Unified School District’s Stars Academy as a former employee. Jabari is also the former percussion instructor for Citrus Height’s Northridge Music before its closure. Jabari is an established local musician as well as abroad having performed venues locally with the renowned vocalist Vivian Lee, Joe Gilman, Garrett Perkins, Reggie Graham, Larry Ellis and Kim Waters. Jabari’s percussion instructions include much more than simply striking a drum or rattling a shaker. In addition to learning time signatures, pitch, measures and phrases, Jabari also incorporates in each student both music awareness and listener appreciation. The student will learn to identify the various music eras from the early 1900’s to modern day styles and interpretations. The styles are inclusive but not limited to Jazz, R&B (Motown Sound), Bossa, Pop, Rock and Funk. This ensures the preservation of the “Music Greats” all while developing new milestones in future music development and creativity.
